Shared spaces for local and refugee women in Berlin 02.09.2022

At our event on September 2, 2022, we discussed what shared spaces we need for native and refugee women, and how we can build and shape them. What are our shared interests, needs, and desires for such spaces? The guest speakers discussed the hurdles facing the establishment of an exchange channel between German and migrant feminists.

The importance of art in establishing shared spaces was often discussed. The important role of alliance building between German and migrant civil society organizations was also a major topic.

We began with a panel discussion between three invited speakers. They presented their experiences in building a shared cultural, artistic, knowledge-based, or feminist space.

Our goal is for the panel to be composed of native Germans, Germans of other heritage, and non-Germans who contribute different perspectives to the topic. After a roundtable discussion with the guest speakers, we opened the discussion to everyone.

The exchange took place in Arabic and German, with live interpretation.

The speakers:

Abir Ali: Self-employed and independent artist and director of the “Hischek, Bischek” project in Berlin.

Barbara Weidner: Works in the field of artistic bridge-building between German and refugee women.
