We Build a network of migrant and refugee Arab women.

who we are

We are an independent, non-profit civil society association with the goal of building a network of migrated and refugee Arab women. Women who have enough confidence, knowledge, skills, and enthusiasm to engage in cultural and social activities based on respect for different identities.
We want to bring German politics and German laws closer to the women of the network and understand our work as an active contribution against all kinds of violence, extremism, and discrimination in migrant and refugee communities.

Women for Common Spaces began as an initiative of Syrian journalist Yasmin Merei.

Women for Common Spaces was registered as a non-profit association in 2018.

our approach

Based on our experience in Germany, we are pursuing a new approach to intercultural integration in countries of migration and refuge based on women's solidarity.
We aim to make migrant women more present in circles where decisions are made about their living conditions and needs.
We also aim to reduce the distance between these women and the media, civil society, and political decision-makers in Germany.
We focus on the principle of active participation, taking into account the identities of migrant and refugee women, to enable migrant and refugee communities to contribute to the enrichment of cultural and civil society life in their new home country. Through political and cultural engagement and civic initiatives, they can actively contribute to improving the political and social conditions in their communities and, in particular, the situation of women.

our impact

This is reflected in our workshop programs, which impart knowledge and make female perspectives and memories visible. Through lively discussions and free writing, we offer women the opportunity to express their thoughts and opinions and to document their experiences in writing – often for the first time. In the published text collections in Arabic and German, German media and other interested parties learn about the experiences of refugee women from their own perspective, about their potential and their cultural and personal background.

To enable young Arab women to develop and become active politically and socially, we offer our Leadership Program. We aim to help develop their leadership skills to empower them from a reactive passive position to an active role in society, so that they develop their own cultural, social and political initiatives, such as field studies, interviews, visits to policy makers or establishing advocacy groups.

What we offer

Our public events and publications aim to create a common space of encounter and exchange, for women.
